Listening for gist
It is a strategy to understand the main or general
idea of oral information without focusing on every detail. The students are
encouraged to focus on comprehending the main message rather than understanding
every single word. When learners listen for gist they catch the most important
information of something or general information without details. Gist is
defined as the general meaning or purpose of an oral text, the main or
essential part of a matter, the central idea, the central meaning or theme of a
speech or literacy work, either written or spoken text, the students try to
understand what is happening even if they can’t understand every phrases or
sentence. The students try to catch the key words, intonations, and other clues
so as to make a guess at the meaning. In listening for gist, the key words help
the students understand the context in which they are used. Sometimes finding the gist can be easy, and
others it is necessary to listen more than once.
